lyrics

Tom Dooley was a worried man
He dreamt he’d lost his picking hand
Milling oaks in Tennessee
For Sheriff Grayson’s cabin

Hucked lumber for the city hall
From winter’s last until the fall
Then play all night with spirits free
For all the town to listen

But it seems a dream is coming true
Dooley’s fiddle’s out of tune
The callused fingers of the hand
Too old to play the blues

Shake the barnyard down, Tom
Shake the barnyard down

But Dooley’s folk took pride in haste
They would not let Tom’s talent waste
They warmed his gut with moonshine stew
And settled back to listen

His nerves calmed down as he breathed in
That musky mix of hay and gin
The bass began its thumping tune
And Tom Dooley set to playin’

His fiddle set to weep and wail
A panacea for your ails
The crowd began to rise on up
And shake the barnyard down

Shake the barnyard down boys,
Shake the barnyard down
